For evil to thrive, all that good men and women need to do is nothing. I am challenging you the good men and women of this country to find a way to make your voices heard against any atrocity that is perpetuated in your name by our elected representatives. Make no mistake, politicians are elected to represent the people and to act on our behalf. When our Government implements any policy of which we are proud and which is morally sound, we ought to commend the action and let them know it. On the other hand, when our Government implements a policy that is an affront to all that we stand for as a country and that stinks to high heaven, we must publicly condemn that action and demand its reversal.
The United States of America has now achieved notoriety around the world as the leading bastion of democracy that enforces a national policy of viciously separating little children from their parents who come to this country to seek asylum, or in some cases, even illegally. Under the thinly veiled guise of enforcing the most extreme provisions of an ancient law that past administrations have ignored, our Government on April 6, 2018 decided to callously and carelessly execute one of the most barbaric and inhumane actions in modern American history.
LISTEN……(voices of children in detention centers crying)
I commend Church and other religious and faith leaders who have been silent on too many national issues for too long, but who have said “enough is enough” and who have publicly let their voices be heard on this threat to the moral fiber and conscience of our nation. And if there is a Leader of a Church or mosque or temple or other faith group who is still silent on this clearly repugnant and repulsive moral national scourge, now is the time to remind ourselves of the words of Jesus in Mark 9:42:
“But whoever causes the downfall of one of these little ones who believes in Me—it would be better for him if a heavy millstone were hung around his neck and he were thrown into the sea.”
And in a few verses later we read in:
Mark 10:13-16 –
“Some people were bringing little children to Him so He might touch them, but His disciples rebuked them. When Jesus saw it, He was indignant and said to them, “Let the little children come to Me. Don’t stop them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. I assure you: Whoever does not welcome[ the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.” After taking them in His arms, He laid His hands on them and blessed them”
Prayer is valuable and prayer is necessary. But in addition to prayer, our faith leaders and followers must roll up their sleeves and get their hands in the dirt and speak truth to power in America with the authority of God whenever this is necessary. After all every dollar that we spend in this country reminds us that it is In God We Trust!
The tide has begun to turn on this matter. Four powerful First ladies, Melania Trump, Michelle Obama, Hillary Clinton, and Rosalyn Carter have all publicly condemned the Trump administration policy of forcibly separating children from their parents at an alarmingly increasing rate of 67 per day. Whether you be Democrat, Republican or Independent, your sense of basic human decency must be offended when the very least of God’s innocent children are deliberately subjected to life-scarring treatment in order to send a message to their parents that they are not welcome in the USA, or otherwise to be used as trump-cards for negotiating the funding to build a border wall.
But it gets worse. The administration has a policy for separating children from their parents, but does not have a clear policy for reuniting them in instances in which the parents are deported and the children are left behind There is not much difference between this and kidnapping.
Today, it is forcible separation of children from their parents. Yesterday, it was something else, and tomorrow it will be something else. We the people are the guardians of our democracy. This requires continual vigilance. It takes 100 times more effort to roll back an evil law that is passed, than it takes to stop one from being passed. And with social media in the hands of everyone, there is no excuse for men and women of good will to fail to let our voices be heard in the public square, in support of the good actions of our Government, and in condemnation of their bad actions.
And remember, for evil to succeed, all that good men and women need to do, is nothing.
